Comparing Cloud Takeoff vs Planswift or On Screen Takeoff

Many of our customers initially compare us to Planswift or On Screen Takeoff by On Center, so this document will help you to understand many of the key differences in the products. We hope you find this information helpful.

Technology
OST / Planswift technology is based upon the older client based software model whereby a copy of the compiled code is installed on your PC (doesn't work on a MAC). Cloud Takeoff uses the more modern approach, whereby the source code sits on a centralized server (we use Microsoft Windows Azure to host the application and your plan data) which enables you to access it from any PC or MAC computer with an Internet connection.

Convenience & Portability
 So the number one most important difference that you must first consider is that with Planswift & OST your application and your project data is 'locked' to a single computer. With Cloud Takeoff your application and your project data is available to you from anywhere you happen to be, all you need is an Internet connection. Ease of Use Cloud Takeoff features a simple "point and click" interface which is intuitive and easy to become productive with very minimal training. Planswift is a complex program with hundreds of different features which for many users, goes way beyond their needs and desire to learn.

Multiple Users - "Pipeline view"
With Cloud Takeoff you can have multiple users working on the same project at the same time. All users will also share the Bid Calendar so you can see at a glance what projects are in the pipeline. One user can also upload plans while another user performs the takeoff. Management can oversee all of the project plans and takeoffs from a single screen. None of this is possible with Planswift or OST.

Real Time Collaboration
Getting answers to project related questions can be critical to your objective of winning profitable projects. With our Discussion Tool and the ability to share your entire set of plans with just a single click, we offer real time collaboration and communication directly on the plans. This type of functionality is not available within Planswift or OST.

Multiple Pages Open at Once
With Cloud Takeoff you can have multiple pages open at once, helping you to keep your perspective on the job and making it easy to navigate between pages without delay. Planswift & OST only allow you to work on a single page at a time.

Plan Storage, Security & Data Loss
Digital blueprint files today are big. It's not uncommon for a PDF file with multiple pages to run 50 to 100 megabytes or even more. When using Planswift or OST (or any other client based software) you must store every single blueprint file that you will ever need future access to, on your computer, network or storage device. To be safe, it should be stored in a "redundant" environment whereby you actually should have two copies of every file, stored in two different locations, to guard against potential data loss. You must also be concerned with a virus or other potentially damaging "malware" when downloading and storing large amounts of data.

These issues are not a concern when using Cloud Takeoff as your data is uploaded and stored safe and sound in the Microsoft Windows Azure Cloud storage system, forever, as long as you remain a customer.

Software Improvements and Upgrades
 With Cloud Takeoff there is no charge for these updates as they are part of your normal monthly or annual subscription fee. Updates take place automatically and there is no need for additional IT support or help to manage software upgrades, or worries about new operating system compatibility.

Planswift & OST require an additional fee for future updates and also may require help from an IT professional to manage the upgrade depending upon your configuration.

Interoperability
In the future you can expect to see more of your important data become available directly from within Cloud Takeoff, or your Cloud Takeoff data may become available to you from other applications as well. You see we are one of the founding member companies of the Construction Open Software Alliance. The group is focused on developing and promoting a single data format standard within the construction industry, to make sharing information between applications easier than ever.
